Finally got my parents to dig out my 1979-1980 vintage D&D books and send them to me...

Awesome. I got into pen and paper too late for D&D or AD&D, but I have fond memories of Baldur's Gate on my PC, which used either D&D or AD&D as a ruleset IIRC. Give me a minute to figure out my THAC0.
Next year I've resolved to give Burning Wheel a try.

I don't think there's a 'too late' - I got those books back to try to play after a 20+ year hiatus. I think a lot of people became less enamored with D&D with the later versions, and when Wizards allowed reuse or retoolling of the D&D rules through the Open Game Licence, it allowed a bunch of essentially house-rules versions of the game to be released.
I wanted to take if up again - so picked up the Pathfinder (equivalent to D&D Edition 3.5) but don't really care for the 'feats' and 'traits' crunchiness. Wandered back onto the web and discovered the OSR community.

As a huge GURPS fan, the crunchiness isn't a problem for me. I like PF, if only because it is better than D&D 3.0, 3.5 and so on. Still like the old rules though.
